Cohort heat-map

Retention by cohort: one row per signup week or month, one column per period since joining, each cell shaded by the share still active, with its count. A weighted average row and curve, cohort sizes, cells not yet observed hatched, below-average highlighting, count and cumulative views, sorting, and findings worked out from the numbers. The questions that fit this template: (1) what joins a cohort and what counts as retained (first order then any repeat order, signed up then active, subscribed then still paying) and whether I count people or revenue; (2) the grain, weekly or monthly, and how many cohorts and periods I want to see; (3) where the data lives (a billing export, an analytics tool, a database or a collection). Then build a first heat-map from what I give you, oldest cohort at the top, with the cohort sizes and the date the data was pulled, show it to me, and offer to add a row and a column to the same artifact each period rather than starting a new one.
